My name is Jim Smallman and I’m a full-time stand-up comedian based in Leicester. I’ve been performing to decent acclaim for the past 3 and a half years and this is, of course, one of those emails where I harangue promoters who haven’t seen me before for gigs, and remind those who have booked me in the past that I’m always looking for work. I perform paid work across the UK – I’m a very accomplished MC or perform as opening / support 20-25, and recently have been headlining smaller clubs.
I was a Laughing Horse new act finalist in 2006, and Equity Comedian of the Year finalist in 2007. I have performed in front of 2000 people at the Leicester Comedy Festival Preview Show (very positive review of this on Chortle) and have performed at the full spectrum of gigs – from packed student unions to rowdy “stag and hen” filled venues to debuting my hour long show in 2007’s Leicester Comedy Festival to a sold-out audience and very positive response.
I’m never the best at selling myself, so I’ll bring on the quotes:
“Anarchic and matey in equal measures, Smallman boasts a masterful rapport with the audience and clearly takes much delight in pushing the comedy boundaries… his manic energy was easily picked up by the punters” – Coventry Evening Telegraph
“… Jim Smallman had an impressive stage presence for one so new, holding his own amongst pros… he has great potential.” – Chortle
“… Jim Smallman also shone… he looked completely at home in this lofty company. A laconic, sarcastic gag machine, he’s certainly a comedian to keep an eye on” – Lincolnshire Echo
PROMOTERS / COMEDIANS…
“Jim is a great, reliable act, you know when you book him that he will win the crowd with his easy, faux-shambolic charm. Its when he wheels out the darker, confessional material though that he really shines, its this edge that’s going to take him far.” – Tamsyn Payne, Purple Monkey Comedy
“An endearing and arresting onstage presence divulging finely crafted autobiographical anecdotes laced with deliciously dark humour. A welcome addition to any evening of quality stand-up. Plus he’s always punctual and a delightful chap to boot.” – Anthony J Brown
“I’ve worked with Jim Smallman for over three years and countless gigs, and he has never failed to enliven and invigorate each night whether doing one of his twisted sets or as an MC. He’s the sort of act that audiences talk about and remember…” – Adnan Ahmed, Bottle Rocket Comedy / Showcase Cinema Comedy
“He’s quick, he’s funny and audiences like him. So book him.” – Nick Page
“Really good. Connected well with the audience and had good gags” – Martin Mullaney, Cheeky Monkey Comedy (Birmingham)
“Jim Smallman is rapidly making a noise on the comedy circuit and for all the right reasons” – Geoff Rowe, Director – Leicester Comedy Festival
